Arrest made in 2006 homicide

A Columbus man arrested Tuesday on a murder charge was 15-years-old when police say he killed a clerk at a Buena Vista Road convenience store.

Kevin Johnson, now 17, of 5905 Laurel Oak Drive, was arrested at 3:30 p.m. at Buena Vista Road and Bismarck Drive by Detective Randy Long, Sgt. Frank Massa and Detective Cathy Bush. Charged with the Feb. 14, 2006, shooting death of Balwant Lal, Johnson was identified by witnesses as being the gunman, Columbus Police records state.

"We just talked to some witnesses and were able to determine who the shooter was," said Sgt. Frank Massa. "Just took a little while, but we did it."

Lal was alone the fatal night as he closed the Pyramid Food Mart, at 3512 Buena Vista Road. At the time, it appeared that no one saw him fall to the ground near the gas pumps after he was shot.

The 47-year-old man was shot once in the upper right arm. The bullet exited the upper back.

Police and the coroner was called to the store just before 10 p.m. Nothing appeared to be missing and no suspects were immediately known.
