Today marked the last day to file income taxes, and at one local post office, it was like any other April 15 of the year.
"It's been busy all day, and we expected that," said Mike Matthews, customer service supervisor at the Milgen Road post office. "April 15 has always been one of our biggest days."
Today post offices throughout Columbus extended their pick up times for last minute filers.
The Milgen Road post office — which usually closes at 7 p.m. — extended its window hours to 11 p.m. for those who need to purchase postage.
Milgen Road post office employees will also be stationed outside of the building until midnight to receive income tax forms from last minute filers.
Six other post offices throughout Columbus will allow filers to drop off tax forms in collection boxes by midnight tonight to be postmarked April 15:
- Downtown Station, 120 12th St.
- Wynnton Station, 1179 Henry St.
- Beallwood Station, 3845 Hamilton Road
- Lindsey Creek Station, 3469 Macon Road
- Baker Village Station, 1435 Benning Drive
- Fort Benning Branch, 110 Vibbert Ave.
Matthews said there has been a steady flow of people throughout the day. At around 4 p.m. Tuesday, Matthews predicted an increase in traffic into the evening.
"As people start getting off of work, we get a pretty good line anyway," he said. "It being Tax Day, it'll probably be double that."
The IRS' Georgia office estimated about 25 percent — about 1 million returns — of the 4 million returns from Georgia would be filed during the last two weeks before April 15.
