Broussard, Cherry claim Best Ranger title

Staff Sgt. Michael Broussard and Staff Sgt. Shayne Cherry, both members of the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, captured the 25th annual Best Ranger Competition today at Fort Benning.

"Everything just clicked this week," said Broussard, who was competing in the demanding three-day event for the third time.

"We were probably the most compatible team out there," said Cherry, who was making his second attempt at Best Ranger status.

Broussard and Cherry, who were cheered on throughout the competition by their wives and other family members, finished comfortably in front of of the brother team of Maj. Greg Soule, an ROTC instructor at James Madison University in Virginia, and Capt. Jeff Soule, an instructor in Fort Benning's Ranger Training Battalion.

Finishing third was another team from the Ranger Regiment — Sgt. 1st Class Jeremiah Beck and Sgt. Jeremy Billings.

Only 16 teams among the 28 that started the event Friday morning finished the competition.

Broussard and Cherry will be honored for their accomplishment Monday afternoon at Fort Benning.

U.S. Army chief of staff Gen. George W. Casey Jr. will be the keynote speaker at the award ceremony at 1 p.m.
