Benning to honor volunteers

Fort Benning’s volunteer force will be recognized at a volunteer appreciation ceremony and reception at 4 p.m. Tuesday on the lawn of Riverside, the commanding general’s quarters. Last year, Fort Benning volunteers donated 95,012 hours on post. A symbolic check in the amount of $1.8 million will be presented to Maj. Gen. Walter Wojdakowski, Fort Benning’s commanding general, in recognition of the post’s estimated savings.

National Volunteer Week began in 1974, when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing an annual celebration of volunteering. Every president since has signed a proclamation promoting the week. This year’s theme is “Volunteer to Change the World.”
