One dead in early Monday shooting

A man shot during an apparent burglary Monday morning in Valley, Ala., died shortly afterward at a hospital.

Valley police responded at 4:06 a.m. to a call about shots being fired in the 3000 block of 29th Boulevard, said City Administrator James Bryan. While driving to the home, an officer found a 22-year-old Valley man at 2016 29th Blvd. with a gunshot wound to his chest. EMS personnel were called, and the man was taken to George H. Lanier Hospital, where he died.

Police later learned a homeowner apparently caught two men on his property and fired several shots. A bullet hit one of the men while another round hit the window of a home across the street, passing into a residence where people were sleeping, Bryan said.

"We're still conducting the investigation," said Police Chief Michael Taylor.

Bryan added that one of the officers responding to the shooting lost control of his police car on the wet road near Interstate 85 and U.S. 29, striking a guardrail. The car wouldn't work, though the officer wasn't injured.
