About 400 people came out to raise money for cancer research during the Russell County Relay for Life Friday and Saturday at Garrett Harrison Stadium in Phenix City.
"It was fantastic," said chairperson Tereesa Smith. The annual overnight relay is designed to bring together community members affected by cancer and raise money for the American Cancer Society. Participants register in teams and take turns walking or running laps during the night.
Smith said they fell short of their fundraising goal of $95,000, raising about $79,000 so far. She said they will have the final total later this week.
"But we had a lot of new teams this year, so we were excited about that," Smith said. She also said that every team that participated this year was committed to participate in the relay again in 2009.
