Alleged bank robber waives hearing, gets no bond

The case of the Helena, Ark., man accused of robbing the 18th Street Wachovia Bank is headed to Superior Court.

Jamal Stephens, 19, waived his preliminary hearing this morning in Columbus Recorder's Court. Senior Judge Michael Cielinski gave Stephens no bond and bound the case over to Muscogee County Superior Court, where it likely will be presented to a grand jury.

Police say Stephens entered the bank around 3 p.m. June 30, pulled a handgun and demanded money. A bank teller gave him an undisclosed amount of cash, and the suspect ran from the bank. No shots were fired and no one was injured.

Stephens was arrested Friday at the Greyhound Bus station, at 818 Veterans Parkway. Police said the bus on which Stephens had arrived came from Montgomery, Ala.
