The 173rd Airborne Brigade Foundation Memorial groundbreaking took place this morning at Patriot Park.
The ceremony included a special appearance by country music act Big and Rich. The duo sang "The 8th of November," a song they wrote specifically in honor of the 48 sky soldiers who lost their lives on Nov. 8, 1965, in an ambush in Vietnam.
The monument, expected to be finished some time next year, will honor the 1,643 men of the brigade killed in action in Vietnam and the additional 59 members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
