Col. Keith Lovejoy relinquished command of the United States Army Garrison at Fort Benning this morning to Col. Thomas D. Macdonald.
In an effort to avoid the inevitable afternoon heat, the change of command ceremony took place at 8 a.m. The event, which took place outside Infantry Hall, drew post commander Maj. Gen. Walter Wojdakowski, Phenix City Mayor Jeff Hardin and former Columbus Mayor Bob Poydasheff among others.
Col. Lovejoy will remain in Columbus with his family.
"I've been all over the country. I've been all over the world, but it's always great to come back to Fort Benning," he said.

Macdonald, a graduate of Columbus College, calls the area home. He said he's glad to be back at Fort Benning and looking forward to the challenge of being the post's garrison commander.
"It's daunting for one because it's a huge installation," Macdonald said. "It's a tough job, but I'm home doing it."
