Guitarist Trey Wright guest at next Columbus Jazz Society JazzJam

The Trey Wright Trip will perform at 6-9 p.m. Aug. 10 in the Liberty Theatre, 821 Eighth Ave.

Wright began playing blues guitar at age 15, and was exposed to jazz by a private instructor. He studied jazz improvisation with pianist and composer Steve Dancz, as he studied sociology at the University of Georgia.

In 1994, he co-founded the Athens/Atlanta-based jazz band called Squat. This group won the Best Jazz Award at the Flagpole Athens Music Awards for six years. The band has performed at the Atlanta Jazz Festival, the Twilight Athens Jazz Festival, Harvest Midtown and has performed with Medeski, Martin and Wood, the B-52s, Maceo Parker, Maynard Ferguson, the Squirrel Nut Zippers and the Charlie Hunter Trio.

He freelances in the Athens and Atlanta area and has performed at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, Jazz a Vienne and the World Sacred Music Festival in India. Wright was a featured performer at the Athens Music and Arts Festival, the Lake Oconee Jazz Festival and the Atlanta Jazz Festival. Earlier this year, he joined the Cobb Symphony Jazz Orchestra.

In 2002, he competed a masters of music degree in jazz studies at Georgia State University and he is currently on the faculty at LaGrange College, Kennesaw State University and the Atlanta Institute of Music. Wright has also taught at Gainesville College and was a jazz artist in residence at the University of Georgia.

Two years ago, he released his first solo CD, "Where I'm Calling From." This spring, he began recording his second CD.

Tickets are $7. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments for the jam session (no charge for musicians who sit in).
