Nine fire trucks responded to a fire at the old Swift Spinning Mill on the J.R. Allen Parkway this afternoon, but firefighters were able to quickly contain the blaze.
The call came in about 4:20 and within 40 minutes firefighters had contained the fire in a second-floor vent, preventing it from spreading to the roof of the vacant mill building, said Fire Marshal Tommy Streeter.
No one was reported injured but one firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion.
A witness who declined to give his name said he saw someone taking metal pipes out of the building not long before the fire started.
