Evening robbery attempt caught on tape

Did he smile?

At 11 p.m. Thursday evening, a man attempted to rob the Winn-Dixie grocery store on Macon Road, but his plan went awry.

Columbus police say the suspect pulled a gun and demanded money from the checkout clerk, threatening to kill her. But the clerk told him that there was no money because an exchange had just been made.

She also told him that he was on camera.

The robber then paused, stared up into the camera — and ran.

Police will soon be distributing a photo of the suspect, who is described as a slim man in his 20s and standing about 5-foot-11.
