The Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services promoted five firefighters in a ceremony Monday morning.
Arnold Farley, a 27-year veteran, was promoted from captain to battalion chief, a vacancy created by the retirement in May of Battalion Chief Jim Bryant.
Debra Lynn Martin was promoted to administrative captain; Tommy Lance Smith to lieutenant; Steve D. Hord to sergeant and Danny Irions to fire investigator.
For Farley, it was the culmination of a goal he set as a rookie.
"This will be my last assignment," Farley said. "I got an e-mail the other day from my friend Greg Hutchinson. We started together as rookies and he is no longer with the department. He reminded me I said 27 years ago I would be a battalion chief."
