A Fort Benning-based reconnaissance specialist died from injuries sustained Wednesday while training in Arizona, a release said.
Christopher M. Roulund, 27, a staff sergeant assigned to the Regimental Special Troops Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, was participating in routine military free-fall proficiency training at the Parachute Testing and Training Facility operated by the U.S. Special Operations Command near Marana, AZ, when he and another Benning Ranger experienced a low altitude entanglement and fell to the ground. The accident occurred Wednesday about 1 p.m. EST.
A civilian life-flight helicopter evacuated the Rangers to a nearby hospital. Authorities have no identified the second soldier injured nor did they provide detail regarding the extent of his injuries.
Roulund, a native of Jacksonville, NC, entered the Army on Aug. 11, 1999 and completed One Station Unit Training, the Basic Airborne Course and the Ranger Indoctrination Program at Fort Benning, Ga. He was then assigned to the 1st Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment at Hunter Army Airfield, Fort Stewart, Ga., as a gun team leader.
Other assignments have been as a training noncommissioned officer and assistant operations sergeant at regimental headquarters on Fort Benning. Roulund was also a fire team leader with the 3rd Bn., 74th Ranger Regiment.
Roulund's awards and decorations include four Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, three Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War in Terrorism Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Military Free Fall Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, the Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Marksmanship Qualification Badge.
Military free-fall parachuting is a method of infiltration used by Special Operations Forces to penetrate behind enemy lines. MFF is used by Special Operations Forces in the current war on terrorism.
The accident is under investigation.
