An Opelika police officer is dead in a Sunday afternoon hit-and-run.
John Belk III, 39, died from blunt force injuries around 2:50 p.m. CDT as he was driving east on Lee Road 10 in Auburn, said Lee County Coroner Bill Harris.
"It appears he met a vehicle that crossed into his lane of traffic, striking him almost head on," Harris said.
The Ford Explorer, carrying two people, struck Belk's Jeep about 1/2 mile east of U.S. 29 South. The Explorer's two occupants ran from the wreck, but were caught by authorities, Harris said.
Belk had been on his way to a family member's house for an early supper, the coroner said.
"He was a personal friend of mine -- a well-liked officer," Harris added.
