A Lee County man collapsed at an Opelika high school football game Friday, dying later that night at the hospital.
Mark Gothard, 47, of Opelika was at the Opelika-Dothan game when he collapsed during the second quarter, said Lee County Coroner Bill Harris.
"I was three rows in front of him," Harris said. "One of my deputies was one row behind him. We did everything we could."
Harris was watching the game when he heard someone shout his name, saying a man had collapsed. Harris said Gothard — an employee of the Opelika school system — likely died of a heart attack or a pulmonary embolus.
The game was halted while Harris and others helped Gothard.
"I didn't realize they had stopped the game until they moved him to the ambulance," Harris said.
