Three local schools participate in International Walk to School Day on Wednesday

Three local schools celebrate International Walk to School Day with Safe Kids Columbus on Wednesday. The event promotes health, safety, physical activity and environmental concerns.

Sponsors include Safe Kids Columbus, Live Healthy Columbus, FedEx, the Columbus Police Department, community leaders, teachers, principals and parents.

The participating schools are Double Churches Elementary, Rigdon Road Elementary and Clubview Elementary.

Parents and their children can meet at the Crossing shopping center at 8 a.m. for Double Churches Elementary. Rigdon Road Elementary has two meeting points at the corner of Rigdon Road an Clairmont Road and the corner of Fern Street and Briarwood Avenue. Both groups will leave at 8 a.m. For Clubview Elementary, the meeting points are the corner of Clubview Drive and Edgewood Road and the corner of Sue Mack Drive and Edgewood Road. They, too, will leave at 8 a.m.

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, child pedestrian fatalities decreased by 40 percent between 1995 and 2005. Programs like Walk You Child to School Day help to teach children how to walk to school safely.
