Wetzel and Walker win Phenix City council seats

Phenix City residents will see two new faces on their city council after incumbents Ray Bush and Gail Brantley both lost their seats in a runoff election Tuesday night.

Planning commissioner Jimmy Wetzel beat Bush by more than 170 votes, 228 to 49, to win the election for the at-large seat on the council. Michelle Walker beat Brantley by more than 90 votes, 147 to 56, to win the District 2 seat on the council.

The runoff was scheduled after a close election in August.

In that election, Wetzel received 1,332 votes and Bush got 825 votes. A third candidate, J.W. Brannen, got 576 votes and was not eligible for the runoff.

In the District 2 council election in August, Walker was received 313 votes and Brantley received 292 votes. A third candidate, Georgia Laningham, received 110 votes and did not participate in the runoff.

During the August election, incumbent Arthur Sumbry kept his District 3 seat after defeating Bobby Stallings 429 to 276.
