A Smiths Station, Ala., man was fatally shot Tuesday morning, and another Lee County man is in jail charged with murder.
Bryan Hurst, 32, was found inside his mobile home, at 899 Lee Road 292, around 11 a.m. CDT. after the Lee County Sheriff's Office was called by Mike Britton, who also lived at the home with his daughter. Upon arrival, law enforcement they spoke with Britton, 57, who told them a shooting had happened, said Sheriff Jay Jones.
Only the two men were present that morning, Jones said. The daughter, who has a child with Hurst, wasn't there at the time.
Hurst's body was found on with a gunshot wound to the chest in the kitchen of the mobile home.
"When the deputies arrived and located Mr. Hurst, he did not exhibit any signs of life," Jones said.
Britton gave a statement to deputies, and he was taken into custody after a preliminary investigation and charged with murder. Deputies found a 20-gauge shotgun on the scene. While Jones said evidence points to the shotgun as the weapon used, it's been sent away for testing.
"The shooting is believed to be linked to an ongoing domestic issue that included a call from the same residence at approximately 9 p.m. last night (Monday) when Britton reported an assault had taken place involving Hurst and Britton's daughter," Jones said in a statement.
Britton called police that night, though both his daughter and Hurst were gone by the time deputies arrived.
Hurst's body was sent to Montgomery for an autopsy.
Britton is held at the Lee County Detention Facility. Bond hasn't yet been set.
