The deadline for filing a 2007 income tax return and to receive an economic stimulus payment is a week away, the Internal Revenue Service says.
An estimated 134,000 retirees and disabled veterans, who don't normally file a tax return, may be eligible to receive a stimulus payment, the IRS says.
The final day for filing a return — even those who sought an extension earlier this year — is Oct. 15, unless they were affected by severe storms and tornadoes that swept through Georgia this summer.
"We want to make sure every Georgia who is eligible to receive an economic stimulus payment files a return so they can receive their money," said IRS spokesman Mark Green.
The Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 offered payments up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for married couples meeting certain criteria. There also is a payment of $300 for each qualifying child.
