Woman arrested for cruelty to children

A women was arrested Monday on a first-degree cruelty to children charge.

Police learned of it when an Eddy Middle School teacher saw marks on a girl's arm and started asking questions. The girl told her teacher she had been beaten with a curtain rod.

A visit to the hospital confirmed it was abuse, the lieutenant said. She had injuries from Sunday on her arm, back and thigh.

His office then spoke with Shemeka Sims, 30, who was charged with first-degree cruelty to children after an interview.

"She admitted she whooped her, but she didn't go into any detail about what she hit her with," Kennedy said. "The wound was open. The skin was torn."
