Reports: Bus driver 'kicked,' 'hit' student

A bus driver with the Muscogee County School District was arrested after she allegedly assaulted a Double Churches Middle School student today.

Audrea Laverne Stewart, 35, of Columbus was booked into the Muscogee County Jail at 5:30 p.m. on a misdemeanor battery charge, said Sheriff's Lt. Pam Brown.

"The bus driver kicked and hit the student . . ." Brown read from Stewart's arrest report.

Valerie Fuller, the school district's communications director, said she hasn't yet received the Columbus police report about the alleged incident against the girl that happened between 3:30-4 p.m. at the school.

"There was an incident, and we're investigating that incident," Fuller said.

Stewart remained in jail as of 7 p.m. today under $500 bond.
