Coroner: Man fleeing police may have shot himself

The pursuit of a man fleeing from Opelika officers Sunday ended when authorities believe he fatally shot himself.

Darius Rivers, 29, sped away from police around 2:30 p.m. CDT when an officer who knew he was wanted out of Birmingham, Ala., saw him, said Lee County Coroner Bill Harris. Driving down several city streets, Rivers eventually pulled into a driveway on Hanson Street.

Officers heard a gunshot before the car drove into the property's woodline. After searching the car, they found Rivers' body.

A woman traveling with Rivers was taken into custody. Preliminary autopsy results show the gunshot wound was self inflicted, Harris said.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation has been called in for the investigation. Rivers' body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery.
