Cars broken into, one stolen from Peachtree Mall

A series of car break-ins Saturday night at Peachtree Mall netted thieves guns, electronics and a 1979 Chevrolet.

Four drivers told Columbus police that their vehicles had been entered between 6-9 p.m. while parked at 3131 Manchester Expressway. Two of those drivers had guns in their vehicles. Other items stolen from the four drivers include CDs, DVDs, a laptop, a stereo and a digital camera, reports state.

Some items were recovered when a woman brought a brown purse that she'd found in the parking lot to police. Reports state it had a number of items inside it that were reported stolen.

It appears the thief or thieves used an unknown object on the vehicles' locks to break inside. One driver, who had nothing stolen from his car, told officers his center console gear shifter was damaged.

While officers were in the parking lot, a Valley, Ala. man approached and told them someone had stolen his 1979 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The two-door blue and green car went missing during the same time as the break-ins, reports state.

Mall security has video surveillance of the area. The cases remain under investigation.
