ATV wreck victim had accepted Jesus, father says

The father of the deceased 13-year-old who died Sunday in a weekend ATV accident said today his son had accepted Jesus.

"He accepted Christ a week before he died," said William Kanzler, the father of his 13-year-old namesake. "Without Christ, I couldn't do this. I couldn't make it."William Ryan Kanzler, 13, was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. in the intensive care unit of The Medical Center. Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. said the cause of death was massive head trauma.

Kanzler, the passenger, and another 13-year-old were taken to the hospital Saturday morning after their ATV collided with a state game and fish vehicle at Sandfort and Gallops roads.

Neither teen was wearing a helmet, said Cpl. Steve Norred, assistant post commander of the Alabama State Troopers Opelika post.

State troopers said the conservation enforcement officer's Dodge Dakota pickup truck had the right-of-way when the ATV failed to yield and drove across the road. No charges are pending against the drivers.
