Opelika police charged man in connection with rape of 90-year-old woman

Authorities in Lee County, Ala., have charged an Opelika man in connection with the weekend rape of a 90-year-old woman.

The Opelika Police Department arrested Anthony James Vines, 42, Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. and charged him with first-degree burglary, first-degree rape and second-degree theft of property for an incident that occurred about 5:30 a.m. Sunday at a home in the 1600 block of 5th Avenue in Opelika.

Vines is accused of breaking into an elderly woman's residence, raping her, then stealing a pistol from her home, said Opelika Police Capt. Allan Elkins. The victim was treated at a local hospital for injuries to her foot and elbow. The pistol has not yet been recovered, Elkins said.

Vines is being held in the Lee County Jail. The investigation is ongoing.
