16-year-old surrenders, charged in murder of Phenix City teenager

Police today arrested a Phenix City youth in the murder of Kerri Demarcus Battle, 16, who was shot in his home Thursday night.

Tyquest Hunter, 16, of 2603 Third Ave., turned himself in to an off-duty officer at noon today, said Phenix City Police Capt. Jim Hart. As of 1:30 p.m. he was waiting in an interview room at the police station for investigators.

According to Hart, Hunter, Battle and an unidentified 17-year-old man were in a bedroom of Battle's home around 10 p.m. Thursday when a rifle Hunter was holding discharged, Hart said. Battle was hit once in the head. Officers found him dead after responding to a shooting call.

"Right now, I really can't say," Hart said when asked if the shooting was deliberate. "We know what was said to us by witnesses. I would characterize their relationship as friends."
