Perdue allots $67,952 to Columbus for classrooms

Gov. Sonny Perdue's proposed classroom construction budget includes more than $67,000 for Muscogee County. By comparison, neighboring Chattahoochee County got $615,000. Taylor County could receive $1.3 million.

The money comes from a $1.2 billion construction boom the governor is proposing in the 2009-10 fiscal budget that must be approved by the General Assembly. The money will be borrowed for the projects, which he said would help stimulate the state's sagging economy.

“This year’s bond package, totaling over $1.2 billion in new investment, will put Georgians to work and build critical infrastructure,” Perdue said in a news release. “In a time that we have trimmed our budget in other areas, we are aggressively increasing our bond package by a full twenty percent over last year. This will take advantage of low construction costs and create an estimated 20,000 new jobs in an industry that is ready to go to work.”
