Update: Columbus police find body of fisherman in Chattahoochee River

Columbus police have pulled the body of a fisherman out of the Chattahoochee River.

He fell into the water last night while fishing with a friend who was stranded on a rock all evening.

The friend, identified as Rodney Holland of Phenix City, was rescued by Columbus Fire and EMS early this morning and taken to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

Columbus police Lt. Steve Cox said detectives have been dispatched to the hospital to speak with Holland about the incident.

The men were fishing just south of the 13th Street Bridge, but the man's body was found near the Columbus Civic Center by two men kayaking. The man's clothing matched the description of the fisherman who fell into the water hours before, said Columbus Fire and EMS Chief Robert Futrell

Futrell said a dive team was preparing to go into the frigid water to conduct a recovery mission this morning when 911 dispatchers notified them that a body had been spotted down river.

A boat was dispatched to the scene and Coroner Bill Thrower was called.

Authorities are waiting to release the identity of the drowned man pending notification of next of kin.
