Officer wreck update: Drivers in OK condition

An on-duty Columbus police officer was in a wreck Thursday afternoon — the second wreck involving an officer this week.

Officer Christy Truitt was responding to a call while on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard driving toward Illges Road around 2:15 p.m. when the accident occurred, said Major Julius Graham. A woman driving a 2001 Lincoln Towncar on Buena Vista Road at Illges collided with the patrol car.

“She disregarded the traffic signal, striking the officer’s vehicle,” Graham said. “Both of them are in satisfactory condition.”

When the woman’s car collided with Truitt, she lost control and struck a utility pole. The accident congested the intersection for about an hour, Graham said.

Both drivers were taken to The Medical Center. The vehicles received extensive damage and were towed, the major said.

On Tuesday, a Columbus police officer riding a bicycle was pinned to the wall of building by a sheriff’s vehicle during a wreck. Sgt. Garry Wisham was at Ninth Street and Veterans Parkway around 4:45 p.m. when Deputy Linda Warren, driving east on Ninth, collided with a Phenix City woman in a Dodge Magnum going north on Veterans, reports show.

Warren and Wisham were taken to The Medical Center. Warren was released Tuesday night.
