The Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office said on Wednesday that fires which destroyed two Chambers County churches over the weekend were arson.
On Saturday morning, Union Hill CME Church and Liberty CME Church, about seven miles apart on Lee Road 173 in LaFayette, Ala. burned to the ground.
“They were arson, as well as the third fire, which does not appear to be connected, though we’re not ruling that out,” said Steve Holmes, public information specialist with the state fire marshal’s office.
The third fire was at Pitts Chapel Methodist Church in Lee County, Ala. However, while the Chambers County churches were reduced to cinders, the more than 100-year-old wooden structure on Lee Road 158 still stands on its foundation of large rocks and cinder blocks. Members cleaned it up and worshiped there on Sunday.

There are no suspects and no arrests, Holmes said. Investigators continue to follow all leads.
