A 60-year-old, cast-iron water line about a foot in diameter has broken in Phenix City at South Railroad and 20th Avenue, cutting water service to several hundred homes in that area, said Steve Smith, the utilities director.
Smith said it was too early to tell how long crews would need to repair the pipe, because they still were digging down to reach the break.
He said the break would affect customers in the area north of 13th Street and running west from the Phenix City-Russell County Library at 1501 17th Ave. up to South Railroad Street at Stadium Drive, where the city's intermediate school is located at 2401 S. Railroad St. Phenix City Intermediate principal Joe Blevins said the school's water supply was not affected by the break.
