Authorities are rerouting traffic on Phenix City's South Railroad Street between 17th Avenue and 20th Avenue as a utilities crew works furiously to fix a main water line break that has cut service to several hundred homes.
It was unclear Tuesday afternoon how long repairing the foot-wide cast-iron pipe would take, said Steve Smith, the utilities director.
Smith said the break at 20th Avenue and South Railroad Street had severed water service to customers from 17th Avenue west to Stadium Drive and from 13th Street north to South Railroad Street. He said the broken pipe was about 60 years old, and it's not uncommon for cast-iron pipes that age to become brittle and break.
