Workers hustling Tuesday to repair a major water line break that cut service to several hundred Phenix City residents had a new section of pipe in place by 6 p.m.
Traffic was rerouted around the break at South Railroad Street and 20th Avenue as a repair crew dug a deep pit in South Railroad Street's westbound lane to reach the broken pipe. Smith said they got on the job about 1:30 and were done in a little more than four hours.
Smith said earlier Tuesday that the break in a cast-iron pipe about a foot wide had cut water service to the homes from 17th Avenue west to Stadium Drive, and from 13th Street north to South Railroad Street.
