Today is Ash Wednesday, which for Christians starts the season of Lent.
In services today, clergy are marking worshipers' foreheads with ashes, and intoning: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." As with all of Lent, the observance is one of penitence, sobriety and self-examination.
Lent lasts about 50 days, before Easter.
