BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) — A Jefferson County deputy was treated at hospital Saturday for injuries he received in an attack by the suspect in the fatal Wachovia Bank robbery, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
William Merriweather, 30, is charged with capital murder in the May 14 shooting deaths of two bank tellers, and attempted murder in the wounding of two other Wachovia Bank employees.
Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Randy Christian said Merriweather was having breakfast when he attacked a deputy. The deputy whose name was not released was treated for injuries at UAB Hospital.
Merriweather remains in jail, held in isolation.
