ATLANTA -- The House Rules Committee passed two amendments to House Bill 277. transportation legislation sponsored by Rep. Vance Smith, R-Pine Mountain. The Republican-dominated committee passed the amendments, sponsored by Rep. Calvin Smyre oc Columbus and Dubose Porter of Dublin -- the Democratic leadership. The move appears to give the bill bi-partisan support as it moves closer to a vote later today."I think so," Smyre said. "They are trying to get movement on the transportation bill and there has been a lot of discussion in the last few days."The House is proposing a statewide plan that would be financed by a 1-percent sales tax. The Senate bill, which is scheduled for a vote in that chamber later this week, is a more regional approach to the state's transportation issues.
