The Enlisted Association of the National Guard today gave U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss its G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Eagle Award to honor the Georgia Republican's work on National Guard issues.
Two measures in particular were crafted to to benefit those in the National Guard and Reserve: The “National Guard and Reserve Retirement Modernization Act,” largely incorporated in the fiscal year 2008 National Defense Authorization Act, reduced by three months from age 60 the date for receiving retirement pay for every 90 days a Guard or Reserve member spends on active duty. In 2007, the Senate passed legislation Chambliss introduced to create a reintegration program for National Guard personnel returning from combat, the “Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program.” It includes family counseling, post-traumatic stress screening, financial planning and education, small-business planning, healthcare and veterans benefits education.
