A car crash in Chambers County, Ala., Friday has left an Atlanta area couple dead.
Fredrick Fulks and Essie Mae Chappell, both in their early 50s, were pronounced dead on the scene at around 9 p.m. CDT, said Chambers County Coroner Jeff Jones.
A little before 8 p.m., the couple was travelling north on Interstate 85 near exit 77 in Chambers County, said Cpl. Robert Burroughs with the state troopers’ Opelika post.
“The car went into the median,” Burroughs said. “The driver overcorrected and it overturned onto the shoulder.”

The car then struck a sign post, he said. No other vehicles were involved.
Burroughs said the driver, Fulks, was not wearing a seat belt. The passenger, Chappell, was.
Speed may have been a factor, Jones said.
The accident remains under investigation.
