A estimated 1.75 million gallons of sewage spilled in the Chattahoochee River on Monday, the Columbus Water Works said today.
In a statement, the Water Works said 5.5 inches of rain overwhelmed the sewer system, causing the sewage and rain water to flow into the Chattahoochee River.
Emergency procedures were implemented and the flow returned to normal. Officials are complying with all state and federal regulations in connection with the spill.
