In a move to put more police officers on the streets, Columbus Council agreed to buy 69 police cruisers Tuesday and seek rebids for 100 more.
The purchase is part of a $7 million plan to buy police cruisers for 60 new police officers and replace vehicles that need replacing.
Councilor C.E. “Red” McDaniel attempted to get the council to rebid all the vehicles to give local dealers a better shot at supplying the vehicles. Council supported the option that would help the the new police recruits.
At a cost of $20,800 each, the 69 vehicles will be available in one week. It will take another three months to get them painted and all the high-tech equipment installed.
