Rev. Joe Andrews of Metropolitan Baptist dies Monday

The Rev. Joe Andrews, the pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, died Monday of a heart attack. He was 65 and was president of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, a group of local African-American clergy.

Funeral services are noon Friday at Metropolitan Baptist, 1633 Fifth Ave. Sconiers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation is noon-7 p.m. Thursday at Sconiers, 836 Fifth Ave.

Andrews was a native of Lynchburg, S.C. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Walton Andrews. He is also survived by a son and three grandchildren.

He was licensed and ordained in 1981 as a preacher at Mount Tabor Baptist Church in Columbus. He'd led Metropolitan for 18 years.

Andrews received his undergraduate degree from Troy State University and his Master of Divinity from the Morehouse School of Religion and the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta. Read more in Wednesday's Ledger-Enquirer and on Ledger-Enquirer.com.
