Big sports weekend coming up in Columbus

More than 200 basketball, softball and baseball teams will be in Columbus this weekend.

The Columbus Sports Council and the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department have collaborated for these events.

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announced that Columbus is the new home for the Softball Championship.

The 2009 championship is Wednesday-Saturday in the South Commons Sports Complex, 400 Fourth St., which was the home of the 1996 Olympics.

All 12 of the SIAC teams will begin playing Wednesday at 9 a.m.

The Black Softball Circuit will kick off the Southeast Shootout this weekend as well. The games will not be played until Labor Day weekend, but the BSC, which will be bringing about 100 teams at South Commons, will kick off the parties Friday.

The Youth Basketball of America will feature more than 100 teams for boys ages 15-17. YBOA is the premier youth membership organization for basketball, and tries to provide opportunities for personal growth and development of youth athletes while also reinforcing positive influences, self-confidence, self-esteem and the ability to excel on and off the court. The game schedule will be posted on the YBOAga.org website Wednesday before the tournament and will list the gyms in Columbus where the games will be played.
