Muscogee County School Board to hold called meeting on proposed SPLOST

The Muscogee County School Board will hold a called meeting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5 in the board room of the old Bradley Library on Bradley Drive.

The purpose of the meeting will be to conduct the ninth and final public forum for the district's proposed Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. The ninth forum was scheduled for May 11th, but that meeting has been canceled.

During the called meeting, the board will also vote on a resolution authorizing a SPLOST referendum, to be held on Sept. 15.

The district is beginning the campaign for another SPLOST to help prepare for growth expected when the U.S. Army relocates the Armor School from Fort Knox, Ky., to Fort Benning. Base Realignment and Closure growth is expected to bring about 4,300 students to Muscogee County schools in the next two fiscal years.

The tentative project list totals about $223 million and includes additions to Northside High and Richards Middle, technology and athletics upgrades across the district and five new schools: a new Carver High, a new middle school, two new elementary schools and a fine arts academy.
