Columbus man faces federal charges in child sex case

A Columbus man accused of having sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl on Fort Benning was arrested Tuesday and brought before a federal magistrate.

Stephen Daniel Wheeler, 21, met the girl around June 12 when he approached her at the Fort Benning Commissary, where he works, said FBI Special Agent Todd Kalish in an affidavit. A few days later the girl told Wheeler her father wasn't home, and she invited him for a visit.

"Wheeler said that he pretty much knew what was going to happen when he went to her residence," Kalish wrote.

One of the girl's neighbor's reported the activity to the U.S. Army Criminal Investigative Division, which led to a Monday interview with Wheeler at the commissary.

U.S. District Court Magistrate G. Mallon Faircloth set Wheeler's bond at $5,000.
