Columbus man gunned down on street corner

A man standing on a Columbus street corner was apparently robbed, gunned down and left for dead Wednesday evening. He died following surgery this morning at The Medical Center.

The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was standing at the intersection of 17 Avenue and 39th Street around 11 p.m. when he was shot multiple times, said Columbus Police Lt. Mark D. Starling. The man had no identification on him. "He was rushed to the hospital where he had surgery. He came out of that and was listed in critical condition, but died around 6 this morning," said Starling.

Starling said residents heard the shots but "thought they were firecrackers," then saw the man lying on the street and called for an ambulance.

"He did tell one woman that he'd been robbed," said Starling.

Shell casings were found at the scene. "We know at least one weapon was a semi-automatic pistol," the lieutenant said.

Columbus police are investigating.
