Opelika man found dead in Lee County jail cell

A Lee County inmate is dead from an apparent suicide, authorities said.

Lee County Sheriff's officers found Mark Anderson, 38, of Opelika, with a bed sheet tied around his neck around 7:20 p.m., said Capt. Van Jackson. Officers tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation while waiting for rescue units to arrive, but efforts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Anderson was last seen alive during dinner. He was alone in a secure cell when discovered.

He had been arrested Tuesday by sheriff's investigators and held on charges of third-degree burglary and third-degree theft.
