CONYERS, Ga. (AP) — Police have arrested the boyfriend of a woman who said she had accidentally shot her 9-year-old son in the stomach.
William Brown, 25, was arrested and charged Saturday with reckless conduct and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Jodi Shupe said.
The boy’s mother, Carey Fitts, 30, initially said she had accidentally shot Johnny Andrews early on July 21 in their apartment while Brown was showing her how to use a .45-caliber automatic handgun. Two shots went off, one hitting the boy in the abdomen.
The boy was listed in serious condition Friday in an Atlanta hospital, after having been in critical condition for several days.

Police had initially thought Fitts was pulling the slide back to load the weapon while her finger was on the trigger. She was named in a warrant charging her with reckless conduct, a misdemeanor, and turned herself in Monday afternoon. She was released on bond.
Fitts and Brown were interviewed Friday at the sheriff’s office, and after learning that Fitts and Brown made false statements regarding the shooting, Brown was arrested, Shupe said.
The investigation continues and further charges may be filed, Shupe said.
