The Lee County Board of Education will hold a special, called meeting tonight to approve an interim superintendent.
The meeting will be at 7 p.m. eastern at the Lee County Instructional Center in Salem, Ala. The interim superintendent will temporarily fill the position vacated by John Painter earlier this month while the board searches for his replacement. During a July 19 board meeting, Painter was transferred by a 4-1 vote to special assistant status. He will act as a consultant to the board and continue to receive his $125,000 superintendent salary for the three-year remainder of his contract.
The Lee County School System educates about 10,000 students at 12 schools: four high schools; two junior highs; four elementary schools; an intermediate; and a primary school. It employs about 1,200 employees and has a budget of around $82 million.
