Columbus crime: CB&T ATM stolen, later recovered

Columbus police are searching for the suspect or suspects responsible for stealing a Columbus Bank & Trust Co. ATM machine early this morning using a backhoe and stolen truck.

According to a police report a John Deere backhoe/loader was taken from a construction site on Whittlesey Road, driven across the street to the CB&T at 1695 Whittlesey Road and used to remove an ATM machine. The backhoe belongs to Phillips Construction Co., Inc. and is being used to build the new Rob Doll Nissan auto complex.

The ATM was then loaded onto a stolen pickup truck and driven away. Approximately $250,000 in property damage was done, according to the police report.

The truck and machine were later located in Phenix City following a traffic stop. The driver fled.
